(Discuss the impact of social media on adolescent mental health)。

Introduction

「Social media is very popular among teenagers nowadays. Many young people use Instagram, TikTok and Facebook every day. Some people think social media is bad for mental health, but some people think it is good. This essay will discuss the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. I will talk about both positive and negative effects.」

第一,佢冇明確立場——"some people think... but some people think..."

「While social media platforms have become an integral part of adolescent daily life, with over 90% of teenagers in developed countries maintaining at least one active social media account, their psychological implications remain a subject of significant academic debate. Although proponents emphasise the social connectivity and community-building potential of these platforms, a growing body of longitudinal research suggests a correlative, and in some cases causal, relationship between heavy social media usage and declining adolescent mental health indicators. This essay argues that the net psychological impact of social media on adolescents is predominantly negative, particularly when usage exceeds three hours per day. It does so by examining three key mechanisms — social comparison, sleep disruption, and attention fragmentation — before addressing the counter-argument that social media provides essential peer support networks.」

首先,一個清晰嘅 thesis statement 出現喺第三句:"the net psychological impact... is predominantly negative"——讀者一睇就知你嘅立場。第二,佢有 signposting:"by examining three key mechanisms... before addressing the counter-argument"——清楚交代咗篇文嘅結構。第三,佢用咗學術詞彙例如 "longitudinal research"、"correlative, and in some cases causal, relationship"、"net psychological impact",顯示出你唔係喺度講個人意見,而係基於學術文獻去做論證。

Body Paragraph

Body Paragraph:

「Social media makes teenagers compare themselves with others. When they see their friends posting beautiful photos and having fun, they feel bad about their own lives. This is called social comparison. Research shows that social comparison can lead to depression and low self-esteem. For example, a study by Smith (2020) found that 70% of teenagers feel worse after browsing Instagram. Therefore, social media has a negative effect on teenagers' mental health because of social comparison.」

其次,佢嘅 evidence 使用好表面——"a study by Smith (2020) found that 70%..."

「A primary mechanism through which social media compromises adolescent psychological well-being is the intensification of upward social comparison processes. Unlike offline social environments, where comparative reference points are typically limited to immediate peer groups, social media platforms expose adolescents to a curated stream of idealised content — meticulously edited photographs, selective life milestones, and algorithmically amplified success narratives — that establishes unrealistic benchmarks for self-evaluation. Festinger's (1954) social comparison theory provides the foundational framework here: when individuals evaluate themselves against superior standards, the resulting perceived discrepancy triggers feelings of inadequacy and diminished self-worth. Empirical support for this mechanism is robust. Fardouly et al. (2015), in a controlled experimental study involving 112 female undergraduates, demonstrated that brief exposure to thin-ideal Instagram images produced significantly higher levels of negative mood and body dissatisfaction compared to control conditions. Longitudinal data reinforces these findings; Twenge et al. (2018), analysing a nationally representative sample of over 500,000 US adolescents, identified a sharp increase in depressive symptoms and suicide-related outcomes from 2010 onwards — a trajectory that closely tracks the proliferation of smartphone and social media adoption. This temporal correlation, while not sufficient to establish causality in isolation, aligns with the social comparison hypothesis and gains plausibility when triangulated with experimental evidence. The implication is significant: social media does not merely provide a neutral platform for self-expression; it actively reshapes the psychological landscape within which adolescent identity formation occurs, amplifying insecurities through mechanisms that offline social environments neither generate nor sustain at comparable intensity.」

Topic Sentence——"A primary mechanism through which social media compromises adolescent psychological well-being is the intensification of upward social comparison processes."

Body Paragraph

好多同學一係完全唔處理(直接 ignore 相反觀點),一係處理得好敷衍(寫一句 "some people may disagree but I think they are wrong" 就當交咗功課)。

「Some people argue that social media can actually help teenagers' mental health because it allows them to connect with friends and find support online. However, I believe the negative effects are more important. Even though social media can provide some benefits, the problems it causes are more serious. So overall, social media is bad for mental health.」

你只係 acknowledge 咗有相反意見存在,然後就用一句 "I believe the negative effects are more important" 輕輕帶過。

「It would be analytically incomplete to suggest that social media exerts exclusively negative psychological effects on adolescents. A substantial body of scholarship has documented the protective and restorative functions of online peer networks, particularly for adolescents who experience social marginalisation in offline contexts. For instance, Berger et al. (2022) found that LGBTQ+ adolescents who actively participated in moderated online support communities reported significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation compared to those without such access, largely attributable to identity validation and reduced social isolation. This finding carries considerable weight and challenges any unqualified condemnation of social media's psychological impact. However, three qualifications warrant consideration. First, the protective benefits identified in Berger et al.'s study were contingent upon participation in moderated, structured online communities — environments that constitute a minority of adolescents' actual social media usage, which predominantly occurs on algorithm-driven, engagement-optimised platforms. Second, the same connectivity that facilitates supportive interactions also enables pathological social dynamics, including cyberbullying and exclusionary group behaviours, with research by Kowalski et al. (2014) indicating that the psychological harm caused by cyber-victimisation typically exceeds that of traditional bullying due to its inescapability and permanence. Third, the critical distinction lies not in whether social media can produce positive outcomes, but in whether its net effect — accounting for both benefits and harms across the general adolescent population — is favourable. The epidemiological evidence reviewed in the preceding sections, particularly the population-level trend data, suggests it is not. This essay therefore does not dismiss the potential benefits of online peer support but argues that they are context-dependent, unevenly distributed, and ultimately insufficient to offset the broader structural harms generated by current platform architectures.」

段落 A 最後一句:「Therefore, social comparison on social media negatively affects teenage mental health.」
段落 B 第一句:「Another negative effect of social media is sleep disruption.」

段落 A 最後一句:「This endogenous psychological mechanism, however, does not operate in isolation; its effects are compounded by behavioural patterns that social media platforms structurally incentivise, most notably the displacement of sleep.」
段落 B 第一句:「The relationship between social media usage and adolescent sleep deprivation has emerged as one of the most consistently replicated findings in digital health research over the past decade.」

Conclusion

「In conclusion, this essay has discussed the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. It has shown that social media has many negative effects such as social comparison, sleep problems, and distraction. Although there are some positive aspects, the negative effects are more significant. Therefore, teenagers should be careful about using social media and parents should monitor their children's online activities.」

第一,純粹 summarise 而冇 synthesize——"this essay has discussed" 同 "it has shown that" 呢啲 phrasing 只係將前文重講一次,冇將唔同嘅論點整合成一個更高層次嘅 insight。第二,提出咗一個好 vague 嘅 recommendation——"teenagers should be careful" 同 "parents should monitor" 呢類建議太過 general,冇任何具體性或者政策 implications。

「This essay has argued that social media's net psychological impact on adolescents is predominantly negative, advancing this claim through an examination of three interconnected mechanisms: the intensification of upward social comparison, the structural displacement of sleep, and the fragmentation of sustained attention. The significance of this analysis extends beyond an academic exercise in weighing evidence. If the mechanisms identified here are indeed fundamental to how social media platforms interact with adolescent developmental psychology, then current regulatory and educational approaches — which predominantly focus on digital literacy and screen-time limits — may be insufficient. Platform architectures designed to maximise engagement through algorithmic curation are not value-neutral conduits; they actively shape the psychological conditions under which adolescent identity formation occurs. This recognition carries implications for multiple stakeholders. For educators, it suggests that digital literacy curricula should move beyond cautionary messaging to incorporate critical media psychology and algorithmic awareness. For policymakers, it underscores the need for platform transparency mandates — particularly regarding algorithmic recommendation systems targeting minor users — that go beyond the self-regulatory frameworks currently favoured by industry. For researchers, it highlights a pressing need for longitudinal, platform-independent studies capable of disentangling the specific causal pathways proposed here from the broader matrix of adolescent developmental challenges. The question, ultimately, is not whether to disconnect adolescents from digital social networks — an unrealistic and arguably undesirable proposition — but how to redesign these digital environments in ways that preserve their connective potential while mitigating the psychological harms identified in this analysis.」

跟住佢做咗三件高分 Conclusion 必須做嘅嘢:講 broader implications(對 educators、policymakers、researchers 嘅影響)、acknowledge complexity("not whether to disconnect... but how to redesign")、同埋用一個 thought-provoking 嘅 closing 去收尾。

佢會 generate 到好多 "on the one hand... on the other hand..."
換句話講,中學係 "show me you've learned",大學係 "show me you can think"。
